What Mediumship Taught Me About Life After Death
When I joined a mediumship development class some seasons ago, one of the first things that surprised me was how funny the spirit world could feel!
We practiced reading for one another as students, learning to quiet our minds, notice subtle impressions and share what came through without trying to make it sound more impressive or logical.
Some messages were emotional. Others were incredibly specific. And some revealed that those in spirit still seem to have very much the same personalities and sense of humor they had while they were here.
What Is Mediumship?
First of all, what is mediumship? Mediumship is the practice of receiving and relaying information believed to come from someone who has died. The medium serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.
The word medium itself helps explain the process: we meet somewhere in the middle.
The way it was explained during my development is that spirit lowers its vibration while the medium raises theirs through meditation, stillness and focused awareness. It is almost like adjusting two frequencies until they can meet.
This does not always mean seeing a fully formed spirit standing in the room. Communication may arrive through an internal image, a word, a physical sensation, an emotion or a sudden piece of information that seems to appear from outside your ordinary train of thought.
Learning to trust those first impressions is a large part of the practice.
If you received a subtle impression that might be from spirit, what would your first reaction be?

They Often Show Themselves at Their Happiest
One of the most beautiful things I learned is that loved ones in spirit often present themselves during a time when they felt happy, healthy or most like themselves.
Someone who was elderly or ill before passing may appear younger, stronger or more vibrant. Rather than showing the condition of the body they left behind, they may show an appearance that reflects how they still see themselves.
Their final days do not appear to define them.
The Spirit Realm Has a Sense of Humor
This was one of my favorite discoveries: personality does not seem to disappear.
The funny uncle may still be funny. The sarcastic grandmother may still have perfect timing. Someone may refer to a private joke, an embarrassing memory or one of their familiar habits.
Sometimes the humor itself becomes part of the evidence. It carries the person’s personality and lets the recipient recognize exactly who is coming through.
It can also change the emotional atmosphere of a reading. Instead of feeling dark or frightening, the connection may feel warm, familiar… and surprisingly light.
Life After Death - The Details Can Be Strangely Specific
Mediumship is not always made up of grand spiritual messages. Sometimes the information seems completely random.
A medium might receive an image of a particular object, food, item of clothing, pet or place. The detail may mean nothing to the medium but have immediate significance for the person receiving the message.
One of the important lessons I learned was to share the information before trying to interpret it. The medium does not always need to understand why something matters.
In fact, the unusual details can be more meaningful than a general statement such as “They love you.” A private memory or obscure reference can carry the unmistakable personality of one particular person.
I’m also talking about this in my Substack chat. If you’ve ever experienced a sign or message from a loved one who has passed, I’d love for you to join the conversation and share your story in the comments.
Their Message Is Often: Live Your Life
Many of the messages that came through during our practice carried a similar feeling.
Our loved ones do not want us to remain consumed by sadness or fear. They want us to be happy, to laugh, to love and to experience life while we are still here.
They may encourage someone to travel, become more adventurous, pursue something meaningful or stop worrying quite so much.
This does not mean grief should be rushed. Grief is real and deeply personal. But there is often a sense that those in spirit do not want the pain of their death to become the reason someone else stops living.
The message is often beautifully simple:
Remember me. Love me. But please keep living… fully.
You Cannot Always Choose Who Answers
Connecting with spirit is not quite like calling one specific person on the telephone.
It is more like opening a line to the spirit realm. You may hope to speak with your aunt, but your uncle notices that the line is open and gets to the phone first.
Another relative may have a stronger message. Someone unexpected may appear. Occasionally, the person you hoped to hear from does not come through at all.
This is why no practitioner should guarantee contact with a particular person. We can create the space for communication, but we cannot control who chooses to enter that space.
If your loved one does not appear, it does not mean they are angry, lost or disconnected from you. It may simply not be the right moment, the right practitioner or the way that particular person chooses to reach you.
They May Already Be Reaching Out
A mediumship reading is only one possible avenue of connection.
People often describe vivid dreams, familiar scents, meaningful songs, repeated symbols, unexpected memories or a sudden feeling that someone they love is near.
Sometimes another person says exactly what they needed to hear. Sometimes an important object appears at the perfect moment. Other times, a coincidence feels so specific and personal that it is difficult to dismiss.
Not every song, number or bird needs to become a message. But certain experiences carry a feeling of recognition that can be difficult to explain.
When Loved Ones Come Through in My Work
Although I do not currently offer standalone mediumship readings, I have experienced loved ones in spirit coming through while I am working in the Akashic Records. I have also witnessed clients have their own unexpected encounters with loved ones during Past Life Regression and Life Between Lives sessions.
When I open someone’s Records, the purpose is to receive the soul-level information and guidance that are most relevant for them. Occasionally, a loved one chooses to enter that space with a message or a recognizable detail.
Loved ones may also appear during hypnotherapy, particularly in a Life Between Lives session. While in the hypnotic state, someone may meet their spirit guides and unexpectedly encounter a loved one who has passed.
For many people, this becomes a beautiful and healing surprise.
There is more than one doorway through which connection can happen. Mediumship is one. The Akashic Records can be another. Dreams, meditation and the hypnotic state may also create opportunities for experiences that are harder to access through the everyday thinking mind.
Creating Space for Connection
You do not have to force an experience or search constantly for proof of life after death.
Begin by finding a quiet place and setting a clear intention. Take a few slow breaths, allow your body to relax and open with a prayer or request for loving protection and guidance.
You might invite a loved one or spirit guide to come forward if it is appropriate. Then release the expectation of how the connection should happen.
Notice the first image, word, memory, feeling or physical sensation that arises. You can write down what you receive and consider its meaning afterward rather than analyzing everything during the experience.
When you are finished, close the meditation with gratitude and bring your awareness fully back into the room.
Connection becomes easier with patience and practice. If nothing happens the first time, it does not mean you failed.
Try My Guided Meditation
If you would like to explore this for yourself, I created a guided meditation called Meet Your Loved Ones in Spirit: A Deep Healing Meditation.
It is designed to help you relax, quiet your mind and enter a safe inner space where you can invite a loved one to meet you.
You may see them clearly. You may sense their presence, receive a memory or simply experience a feeling of peace. You may also experience nothing immediately and notice something later through a dream or synchronicity.

Love does not always announce itself dramatically. Sometimes it reaches us through a dream, a song, a laugh, a memory… or just a sudden desire to begin living more fully again.
